This will fix the economy and I will vote for it.

This is from an article in the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper on Sunday:

The Business Section asked readers for ideas on "How Would You Fix the Economy?"

I think this guy nailed it!

Dear Mr. President, Please find below my suggestion for fixing America's economy. Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan. You can call it "The Patriotic Retirement Plan":

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire.. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.

2) They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.

It can't get any easier than that!

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members in Congress and their constituents pay their taxes... and Mr. President... while you're at it... make congress retire on Social Security and Medicare.... I'll bet both programs would be fixed... pronto!!

In the newsletter, there was the comment that "they spit on us..." and this is something that I have always wondered about.
I was never spit on. Were any of you spit on? How badly did you beat the spitter up?
I don't think that any of us would have tolerated being spit on.
I have long thought that this was a myth. Maybe someone somewhere was, but largely this is a hard to prove story. But I doubt it ever happened.
I was always treated with respect and had a lot of free drinks at airport bars when traveling in uniform. This is just something to think about. Did you ever see it happen or actually know someone who was spit on?

Fred, I was spat at once but he missed me. I was on recruiting duty in Kalamazoo, Michigan, 1969 - 74, a town hosting 2 colleges and 1 university and every Wednesday at 1pm sharp, the students would file into the Federal Building, proceed downstairs, and take up sitting positions from one end of the hallway to the other. We would typically shut and lock our doors and take an hour long nap until they had exited the building. They never gave us a bit of physical problems. However, I was forever finding my literature racks empthy one my road days, especially in Paw Paw, MI. With a little detective work, I learned that a professor from one of the colleges was coming to Paw Paw from Kalamazoo with his students passing out literature, talking to people around town, and empthying out the recruiting literature racks. I was walking downtown one day checking my lit racks and happened into one of these groups and they did their best to intemidate me but I just smiled and kept going.(It would have been 20 to 1!) I was hoping one of them would touch me or give me reason to play a game of "whoopass", but eventually I was allowed to go on my way. When I got to the Post Office and started up the steps, I heard somebody spit. I looked up just in time to dodge the spit and took off after him with several of his buddies behing me. I wasn't sure what I was going to do to him when I caught him but I was determined to catch him. Well, he must have been part greyhound cause he left me behind even though I was way ahead of his friends. I never saw him again. I believe one of the reasons I didn't encounter to many problems was because I lived in my hometown while on recruting and was married. Still to this day I scan faces long before they ever are near me and if I ever see him and know its him I will do my damnest to spit on his ass. BB
